Prenatal checkup

Prenatal check-up refers to the set of tests that are necessary to be done at the beginning of pregnancy or when a couple is thinking of having a child.

This is a very important series of examinations for the safety of the mother but mainly for the safety of the child.

This check includes tests that show the general state of the mother's health and the purpose is to identify problems that may cause complications during pregnancy or childbirth and to deal with them in time.

It is done painlessly with blood tests and urine tests and they are basically preventive tests that aim to diagnose a problem with the woman's health in time.


Below are the prenatal check-up tests:

1. General Blood Test

It controls the levels of all kinds of cells.

2. General Examination of Urine

To rule out the possibility of an infection.

3. Biochemical Examinations

Examination showing the presence or predisposition to developing diabetes mellitus.

4. Determination of Blood Group:

This test shows us the blood group and the Rhesus factor.

5. Indirect Coombs

Diagnostic test to find the cause of fetal anemia.

6. Hemoglobin Electrophoresis

Diagnosis if the woman is a carrier of the stigmata of Mediterranean anemia or other anemia.

7. Sickle Test

Sickle cell disease (hereditary disease) is being investigated.

8. Thyroid Function Check

The tests of the pregnant woman include the control of the hormones of the thyroid gland for the possible existence of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

9. Special Blood Tests

The purpose of the test is to find out if the expectant mother has toxoplasma antibodies or not.

10. Vaginal Fluid Culture:

Microscopic examination and the culture of vaginal fluid for possible symptoms of the pregnant woman.


In any case, preparation must begin before pregnancy or as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. The pregnant woman should follow a balanced diet of high nutritional value and other necessary vitamins and trace elements recommended by the doctor. Activities like swimming, walking and yoga help the pregnant woman's body to stay in good physical condition.
